The coastal city of Bridgeport is located on Long Island Sound in Fairfield County in Connecticut. It is the largest city in the state with a population of 137,912 people. The median household income is $34,658. Located outside of New York City, the city is within easy commuting distance and is considered to be part of the city’s labor market.



Bridgeport has numerous attractions and great historic significance. There are two large parks in the city: Beardsley which is in the northern section, and Seaside which is west of the harbor, along Long Island Sound. Seaside park features statues of Elias Howe, who built a large sewing-machine factory in the city in 1863, and of P.T. Barnum, the circus coordinator, who once lived in Bridgeport. Seaside Park also features a soldiers' and sailors' monument in memory of all those who have been lost. Bridgeport is home to several museums such as the Barnum Museum, and the Discovery Museum and Planetarium. Beardsley Zoo is the only traditional zoo in the state of Connecticut. In addition to museums and attractions, Bridgeport hosts many sporting events. The Arena at Harbor Yard serves as the city's main sports center. The arena seats 10,000, and is the home rink of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, an AHL hockey team. Fairfield University also uses the arena for their basketball team. The Ballpark at Harbor Yard is the home of the minor league baseball team, the Bridgeport Bluefish, and was built in 1998. Public transportation is readily accessable throughout Bridgeport. There are many bus stations, railroad/amtrak stations, as well as ferry service to Port Jefferson, New York.
